The brains behind Capitec Bank, Riaan Stassen, has been honoured as Die Burger and Cape Town Chamber of Commerce Business Leader of the Year. Stassen (60), who retired last year as CEO, started Capitec in 2000 with Michiel le Roux and support from the PSG group of Stellenbosch. Stassen was singled out for his sustained focus to making banking simple, affordable and accessible.
At the same event, Francois Pienaar, former Springbok captain, who led the Springboks in 1995 to victory in the Rugby World Cup, has been honoured as Ambassador of the Year. This award goes annually to someone who has made an exceptional contribution by building South Africa's international image.
